-I have a few friends that do dancing outside of school and their dance schools do competitions against other ones nearly every week. I am a dancer also (jazz and contemporary) and do classes every week and do 2 concerts a year (about 4 of our dances performed in each) but no compeitions. I feel like I'm missing out on alot, since I know others do competitions. It depends- do you view dance as a sport to stay in shape or an artistic outlet? Competitions are more like sports, and performances have an artistic aspect to them that competitions lack.
I personally prefer performance, because it's less high-pressure and you get to immerse yourself in a role and only that role. I've done one competition, and it was okay but I don't really feel like repeating that experience. I also tend to find that it's easier for me to focus on technique and artistry when I don't have to worry about some upcoming competition, even if that sounds counter-intuitive.
It depends if you like dance as a sport or performing art.
If you enjoy it as a sport then you my want to move to a studio that does do competitions.
Just know that competitions end at highschool. When you move on to college or professional levels, it's mostly performing arts.
