-I used to do acrobatics and gymnastics but now I have quit that because it takes up too much time. I have recently signed up for contemporary dancing since I have done other types of dance since I was 1 years old, and on my resume it listed everything I have done in the past. The teacher said she was really impressed and now i'm panicking because I have a lot to live up to!! btw Im the youngest in the class of only 8 students, so they probably think that i won't be able to keep up BUT I WANT TO PROVE TO HER THAT I CAN. I just want to do really well, so what can i do to make sure i do well and not embarrass myself?Forget that you have to be the best just do YOUR best and it'll be good enough and pay attention to the teacher, thats what i do (im not that great ) but the teachers always love me because i dont talk in class, i pay attention, and i do my very best. Good luck!
What you have going for you: A fit, flexible body. Experience in a class setting where you're physically challenged. Other types of dancing, so you have a sense of moving in rhythm.
I think contemporary dancing will be a great fit for you. It has more freedom than ballet, so you will be able to bring all your past accomplishments to this new form. Everybody is a little awkward when they first try something different, so don't be surprised if your classmates aren't perfect either. You're all there to learn and make progress!
You'll probably shine in at least one area. In class, keep focused and don't fool around or show off. In ballet class, students are told, "Never sit during a class," because they need to build stamina and keep their muscles warmed up. If you want to do some extra work at home, do slow stretches, and exercises for aerobic fitness. Don't try to practice the moves and steps you're learning in class. You really need the feedback in class from your teacher, so you don't develop any wrong habits.
Your new dance class will be a lot of fun and very satisfying!
